What to Look for in a Sewing and Quilting Table

Choosing a new sewing and quilting table requires careful consideration of a wide range of features and possibilities. When looking for a new table, these are some of the most important considerations to bear in mind:

As a result of the wide range of pricing available for sewing machines and tables, you’ll need to select one that’s right for you. Tables at lower prices can still be found, but you won’t get the same selection or quality as those at higher prices.

The most important consideration for storage is sufficient room. If there’s not enough room, you won’t be able to store your sewing accessories in the same place. A good sewing machine table should provide ample storage to help keep all your notions and tools organized and close at hand.

The most important consideration in materials is durability. It’s better to select a table constructed from sturdier materials with the understanding that these will be significantly more expensive than less sturdy options. In some cases, this may mean sacrificing storage space for a table with reinforced materials, such as metal. When shopping for your ideal sewing machine table, get a sense of the quality of any material before you commit to it.

In addition to being durable, you will want to make sure your table offers stability and is not wobbly. A wobbly table can make it difficult to achieve a straight line when sewing. So look for a table that has good balance and support.

Sewing Machine Slot

Does the table offer a drop-in slot for your sewing machine? If so, how deep is it? A deeper slot is better, because that means you can drop in your machine more easily and with less risk of bumping up against the edge. Do you have a smooth needle-to-work surface? You need this if you plan to do a lot of sewing and especially for quilting. But note that a deeper slot often means you’ll have to compromise some storage space.

On most tables, you’ll get a stationary slot. On other tables, especially those with drawers, you may get a removable slot for easy storage of your sewing machine when not in use. Some tables come with a sewing machine lift. The lift uses a special aperture in the center of the table to safely and securely lower it a few inches into the table. This creates a level space for working.

The craft table I currently use is an adjustable sewing table with an airlift. This makes adjustable height work a cinch for all of my sewing crafts.

Tabletop Space

You definitely want to avoid selecting a table that is too small for your needs. On the other hand, you don’t want to select one that’s too big; it will take up more valuable space in your home or studio. You should have enough room to have enough space for storing your supplies and machines, as well as for working on your projects and setting up projects on the table.

Within this general range of size, there are some other things you need to keep in mind when selecting a sewing machine table. The first is height. Sewing tables typically range in height from 28 to 30 inches. To make sewing more convenient, the sewing machine’s shelf should be able to be lowered to a variety of heights on the table. On the other hand, if you are over 6′ tall, you may want to select one that’s higher. This will give you better posture and make it easier for you to work on your projects without having to hunch over too much.

Another thing worth considering is the texture of the quilting table. You want a smooth working surface that will allow fabric to glide across the table’s surface easily, without sticking or getting caught on any bumps or uneven areas.

You might also want to consider a table that offers a built-in light. These are particularly useful when you work on your projects at night.

Finally, I like to have enough workspace to fit my cutting mat for a nice, level work surface. This allows me to complete my sewing projects from start to finish on the sewing desk.

When selecting a sewing and quilting table, you might want to consider whether or not it’s portable. If you’re limited on space, you may have to move the table frequently to make room for other activities. Or if you share a space with other family members who don’t like your machines, the ability to move the table is an important feature. In either case, it will make your life easier if you select one that has wheels and can be rolled out of the way when not in use.

In addition to being able to be moved easily, you may want a foldable sewing machine table. It is common for sewing machine tables to have a fold-up feature that allows them to be stored more compactly while they are not being used. One thing to be careful of is this sometimes impacts the stability of the table.

Table Size

The proportions of your sewing table will be determined by the size of your room. If you have a lot of room, a large sewing craft cabinet table can be a good choice because it has plenty of storage space and room to work. If you want to set up a sewing station in your basement or living room, you may want to consider a folding sewing craft table that doubles as a piece of decor.

A new sewing station takes up a lot of room. Depending on where you plan to use your sewing or quilting table, you may need a different set of characteristics. A lightweight and portable table is also an option if you plan to move it around the house.

If you are limited on space, a folding sewing cabinet may be right for you. A sewing cabinet folds out into a full size table but when you’re done, it folds back into its compact size. Sewing cabinets can be great for a smaller sewing room and can double as a sewing craft table when folded.

Because sewing and quilting tables aren’t always used in the same room, you may decide you want to use your sewing table in a different part of the house. If that’s the case, you may want to consider a foldable table that can go from being folded up like a chair when not in use to being extended or retracted into a full-sized table when you’re ready. You can also move your foldable sewing table easily from room to room as well.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Taking good care of your table is important because increased wear or damage can also affect your sewing performance or lead to accidents while using the table. Also, some features are only accessible through maintenance and special tools, so you’ll need to consider these when choosing a new table as well.

Do You Need a Special Table For a Sewing Machine?

Some people use the kitchen table or dining room table. The only problem is, they can be very uncomfortable and make it difficult to control the sewing foot. If you are going to sew for long periods of time, using a proper sewing machine table will make it more comfortable and easier to keep working.

What is the best height for a sewing table?

The most common tabletop height for sewing machines is 28 – 30 inches. If you are under 6 feet tall, you may have to choose one that’s lower. You also need enough vertical space to work without constantly hunching over.

Top Picks for Best Sewing Machine Table

Now that we know what to look for in a sewing machine table, it is time to take a look at my top picks. All of the picks I have either tested at home or in store. I was loucky enough to have some of my quilting circle friends let me use some of the tables I do not own or could not find in stores near us. I can tell you right now, that most quilters go to shops where they can check out the quality of the tables used before purchase, so you will have no problem with this recommendation.

I have broken each of my picks based upon a specific use to help you choose the right table that best meets your sewing needs.

Best Portable Sewing Table

My top pick is the Arrow 601 Gidget portable sewing machine table. It is the one I personally use for traveling. The main thing I love about the table is that even though it is compact, it still provides lots of stability and has been durable.

Arrow 601 Leg Locks

With this table, you can lower a piece of the table to accommodate a sewing machine while still having a flat table for general crafting and creative purposes.

Having a robust table ensures that the machine won’t shake the table. When not in use, the table folds flat for easy storage. For as sturdy as it is, it is pretty light (around 35 pounds). I am able to fold it up and store it under my bed when not in use which is fantastic.

Best for Small Spaces: Sandinrayli Folding Sewing Machine Craft Table

Best for Small Spaces

If you do not have much space in your craft room, this folding table is perfect for you. I qs able to check this one out at my good friend Patty’s house. It was very stable and easy to work with.

The table also does not take up much room and folds up when not in use to look like a coffee table. It is less than 24″ when folded, which is pretty amazing. Even though it is not large in size, it still offers a nice amount of storage space.

If I could change one thing it would be to have a Sewing Machine Slot for the table. In it’s current configuration, you are limited to setting the sewing machine on top of the working surface.

Best for Quilting: Arrow 901 Auntie Sewing Table with Airlift

Best for Quilting

This is the table I use in my crafting room so I have a lot of experience with it. I have had it for many years and it is one of my favorite tables. The only drawback is that it is a little bit on the expensive side, but it has been worth the price and will last me a while.

The size of the table is great but I don’t have a lot of storage space in my room so I wanted a larger table with tons of storage. Thread, rotary cutter, scissors, and other quilting supplies can be stored in the four drawers. On top of being a great sewing table, I love the looks of the table so much.

Adjusting the height of your sewing machine is simple with the airlift. I have never had any issues with it and can’t really think of a thing I don’t like. It is a great table to use if you plan to be sewing and the size is perfect for quilting.

Arrow 901 Auntie Sewing Airlift Assembly

I will say it was not the easiest table to assemble. I can still remember my husband and I going to battle getting the airlift fitted. Once assembled though, it has been solid and easy to work with.

Best for Beginners: Sewingrite 101 Sewing Machine Table

Best Beginner Sewing Machine Table

If you’re just starting out with sewing, you’ll need a table that’s easy for you to get used to. As a result, you may also be concerned about your sewing machine’s cost and how much time you’ll be able to commit to utilizing it.

Sewstation 101 Diminsions

Beginners should consider this budget-friendly multipurpose desk: An adjustable shelf allows you to keep your sewing machine in position as it folds away. For crafting or dining, a flat table can be covered in a tablecloth and used. The table does not require any assembly and is fairly strong once it has been unfolded.

For the price, contraction and functionality, I could not find a better beginner sewing table. It is a great table to use with a sewing machine.

Best Sewing Machine Cabinet: Arrow Bertha Sewing Cabinet (701)

Best Sewing Machine Cabinet

At first, I was not sure how to categorize this craft table and cabinet. It took me awhile before I realized this cabinet is also a sewing machine table. My friend Jenny has this one setup and kindly let me test it out.

After spending a few hours with it, I could see why she speaks so highly of this sewing machine table. It is huge and offers gobs of storage. She was not kidding when she said this cabinet holds so much.

When closed, the sewing machine table is actually a little smaller than a computer desk. I could not believe how much functionality the table offers without taking up much space.

She said the table is easy to assemble, but I do not have direct experience. One of my favorite parts of the table is the working surface. The tabletop is smooth and fabric glides across it with ease. It is a great way to keep your sewing machine out in the open and available for use.

This table can be used for quilting, crafting, or whatever you need it for. It is one of the best sewing machine tables I have tested and would highly recommend it if you are looking to have a lot of storage space with your sewing machine.

The only drawback is it is expensive but I have my eyes on this for my next table upgrade after trying it.

Best Budget Sewing Machine Table: Sew Ready Folding Multipurpose Table

Best Budget Sewing Machine Table

When not in use for sewing, this sewing table doubles as a computer desk. For sewing machines or keyboards, it’s possible to maintain the work area flat and use the drop-down platform as an additional surface. The adjustable height of the droppable platform makes it easy to select the perfect height for you.

Despite the fact that this table is strong enough to support even a heavy sewing machine, you have the option of folding it up and storing it when not in use. Assembling the device will be a breeze for you.

Conclusion for Best Sewing Machine Tables

The tables I have recommended are some of the best sewing machines tables I have tested in person. I will likely update my list of recommendations as I continue to test them. While this list is not exhaustive, it gives you a place to start in your search for the best sewing machine table for your home.

You may already have one and know a lot about it so please feel free to leave a comment below letting me know which sewing machine table you like the best.

FAQ’s About Sewing and Quilting Tables

Q. What height should a sewing table be?

A sewing table’s normal height is from 28 to 30 inches. The sewing machine should have an adjustable shelf on the table so it may be lowered to various heights.

Q. How do you set up a sewing machine table?

Which sewing table you use will determine this. While some are pre-assembled and ready to go, some items are sold that need to be folded or assembled before use. They have to be unlocked to show the sewing machine and its accessories.

Q. What are the best sewing tables from Ikea?

Although I love as lot of furniture from IKEA for my sewing room, (especially the Kallax cubes) I was unable to test any sewing tables from the store. The closest I came was one friend had an IKEA hack where she converted it into a sewing table. The big drawback was it does not have an adjustable sewing machine slot, so it did not beat out the tables on my top list.

Q. What are the best sewing table for beginners?

The Sewrite 101 Sewing Machine Table comes with everything you need to get started with sewing at home. It is a great option for beginners. The only downside is it is not super durable, so it is not ideal for heavy duty sewing.
