What are the Benefits and Why Should Your Child Learn to Sew?

Kids love to get crafty! They can spend hours at a time drawing, painting, making crafts and writing. If you haven’t already witnessed your own mini artist at work (or a budding photographer) you most definitely have friends with children who are artistic.

Sewing is similar to all of those other mediums in that it allows for creativity and provides the opportunity for kids to express their own style and enjoy the results even more once they’re finished. Sewing and other needlecrafts is an excellent way to allow kids to express themselves and it gives them creative direction while they’re young!

Sewing is a form of art that will not only help boost confidence in children, it also gives them a since of independence. Plus, who doesn’t love a new craft project to tackle?

Best Sewing Machine For Kids Comparison Chart

What To Look for in the Best Rated Childs Sewing Machine

There are many factors I considered when choosing a sewing machine for my grandchild. Below I have listed the key features to look for when shopping for your child’s sewing machine.

Bobbin Insertion

Drop-in bobbins make it easy for kids to insert or change their bobbin thread on several machines, like the Brother machines.

Needle Threading System

Using a needle threading system on a sewing machine can make it easier for children to begin sewing.

However, if you want to teach your children how to thread a needle by hand, you may wish to choose models without an automatic needle threader.

Safety Features

Don’t be concerned if the machine you’re looking at doesn’t have a finger guard.
Most of the time, you can get them separately.

Dials and Controls

Children’s sewing machines come with basic stitch settings, but you will want to look for top-of-the-line dials and controls that are intuitive and easy for your child to operate.

I love the sewing machines by Brother because they have a very easy to use dial system which makes it easy for kids to use!

I’ve also found that the Brother and Singer machines have nicely spaced controls on the front of the machine which makes it very easy for little ones to use while they’re sitting down.

A computerized sewing machine is likely to come with a large number of buttons, so this is something to keep in mind. Utilizing a computerized sewing machine will be easier for your child if they are older and more familiar with using electronic equipment.

A foot pedal is used to operate the majority of sewing machines, and it can be challenging for a youngster to determine how much pressure to apply.

Also, the machine must be dependable, as a child may lose interest in sewing if the machine frequently jams or tangles the thread.

Stitch Options

Most kids can get away with the most basic stitch selections unless they intent on making quilts or machine embroidery. First, your youngster may only need a straight stitch and zigzag stitch to get the hang of sewing.

What Accessories Are Included

A lint brush, spare bobbins, needles, and sewing or presser feet should be included in any sewing machine you purchase. It’s not the end of the world if the machine you choose doesn’t come with specific presser or sewing feet, like as a zipper foot or a buttonhole foot.

Potential Frustration Factors of Sewing Machines

By far, the most common frustration for kid’s and beginner sewers is thread feeding. It’s an advantage if thread feeding is simple, especially if you’re using a starter sewing machine for a child. Simple arrows printed on the machine show where the thread should go, which is helpful for beginning sewers. An easily accessible bobbin slot and an easy-to-use winding mechanism are two essential features of any kids first sewing machine.

How young can a child start?

Children who begin sewing at a young age are better able to protect their fingers from the presser foot and are more likely to have a high degree of overall safety than those who begin later in life. The more time someone has to improve their abilities and build their self-esteem, the better.

How to Maintain a Child’s Sewing Machine

When it comes to sewing machine maintenance, the most important thing to remember is to keep lint and dust at bay.

To keep the feed, bobbin case, and other parts of the sewing machine free of lint, most sewing machines come with a little lint brush.

If you’ve ever seen compressed air advertised as a sewing machine cleaning tool, don’t use it on your child’s machine.

What Other Accessories Are Needed

This will depend on what you aim to sew and also what your machine comes with. Beginners will typically only need a few items to get them started, including:

Scissors or Pinking Shears

Pins and/or safety pins (optional)

Measuring tape (optional)

Cutting Mat and Rotary Cutter for fabric cutting

Additional accessories you may want to consider include:

Lint brush. Easily brushes away lint from the sewing machine’s internal workings.

Iron to remove creases from fabric

Extra bobbins and/or sewing machine needles. Sewing machine needles can become dull, bent or broken. Extra bobbins are useful for storing excess thread so the spool doesn’t tangle with the machine’s working thread.

Sewing Machine Table to provide a sturdy workspace

Brother CS6000i Computerized Sewing Machine

Brother CS6000i Computerized Sewing Machine

as of July 20, 2024 8:33 pm

The Brother CS6000i Computerized Sewing Machine was my top pick earlier when I reviewed the best sewing machines for beginners. It is a bargain for the functionality and quality you get for the price. While compiling my list of children’s sewing machines, I knew I had to include it. I will mention, this would be a great machine for a teen but was not my choice for my younger grandchildren due to it being overly complex for a 10 year old.

The Brother CS6000i has a lot to offer. The Brother CS6000i sewing machine is not only easy to use, but it also has a large stitch library for a low price. Many of its owners think it’s a great machine for beginners because of the large table and great price. Because of this, it works well with a wide range of materials, from thin to thick.

Due in part to its usage of plastics, the machine is relatively light in weight. In spite of its plastic build, I have found it to be a reliable workhorse that has stood the test of time for my needs.

Even the most experienced sewers can sew at breakneck speed with this machine’s 850 stitches per minute, making it one of the fastest machines I tested. The noise level isn’t too high at this speed. Using this equipment, I was able to hear a conversation taking place just next to me without any problems.

For most beginners and experienced quilters, the CS6000i has 60 stitch patterns, which is ample. 60 patterns, including seven buttonhole styles, provide you a wide range of possibilities.

Consistent stitching speeds can be achieved with a simple speed control slider.
Stitches included for all types of sewing tasks
This product is built to last for many years to come.
The best machine for saving time and reducing setup complexity

Has to be cleaned on a regular basis
It’s tough to clean the unit completely because of all the little crevices.

Janome Fastlane Fuschia Basic Sewing Machine

Janome Fastlane Fuschia Basic

as of July 20, 2024 8:33 pm

Another one of the cutest machines from Janome that surprised me with how well it sews. Despite the machine’s concentration on personality, it includes a respectable range of more professional capabilities that make the transfer to a full-sized and more well-equipped machine a little easier later on. Overall, this machine ended up being a really good sewing machine for kids.

The free arm feature allows you to sew things like sleeves and cuffs with the machine’s 10 handy automated stitch settings.

Additionally, it has a no-snag drop-in bobbin design that makes winding a breeze.

NEX Sewing Machine Free-Arm Crafting Mending Machine

NEX Sewing Machine

as of July 20, 2024 8:33 pm

If you are looking for a sewing machine for kids that will not break the bank, the NEX may be for you.

Despite its small size, this machine packs a powerful punch, with features such as: Built-in stitch count of twelve Options for both speed and double-threading are available. DC 6V or a rechargeable battery a choice between forward and backward Design with two speeds Easy to carry With its carry handle and measurements of 10.6″ x 4.7″ x 9.5″ This machine is easy to operate, especially for small children, thanks to its light weight of only six pounds.

The FHSM-505 is the ideal machine for home sewers who want to learn how to stitch hems, buttonholes, and other advanced techniques on a tiny, portable machine.
With a 2.5mm thickness, the user may easily sew through six layers of denim.

I will say that it is not as smooth as some of the previous options but it also is a lot less expensive. My favorite feature of the NEX sewing machine is the pedal that allows youngsters to adjust the sewing speed. This is an excellent feature for learning how to use the machine, as it allows them to go at their own pace. By far, our top budget pick!

Brother XM1010 10-Stitch Sewing Machine

Brother Sewing Machine XM 1010

as of July 20, 2024 8:33 pm

Are you still interested in at least a little bit of fun visual detail on your machine, but you’re mostly prioritizing the goal of finding a model that would serve to transition your child from the miniature, plastic guarded little kids’ machine they already have into eventually using a large professional machine more like yours?

Then we think you simply must take a look at this model from  Brother that has the  perfect features for providing just the sewing experience you’re looking for.
This model is slightly smaller than a fully equipped machine and very portable.

Janome Hello Kitty Sewing Machine

Janome Hello Kitty sewing machine

as of July 20, 2024 8:33 pm

This model does require your child to learn a few basic elements of a regular machine, which may take some time and effort, but it will make the move to a full-sized machine much easier when they’re ready.

A tiny, portable machine that is easy for small hands and arms to operate is ideal for children.

Dials for stitch length, stitch type, and sewing direction are all included in the machine.

I did think it was priced a bit high compared to the other Janome sewing machines that I have reviewed. If I was considering this, I would probably go with the Janome Arctic Crystal Sewing Machine and add a Hello Kitty sticker.

Varmax Mini Sewing Machine with Extension Table

Varmax Sewing Machine with Extension Table

as of July 20, 2024 8:33 pm

Taken of the notion of obtaining a kid-sized sewing machine, but you’re worried that your little overachiever would want to construct projects of all sizes, even though their machine is a bit smaller than yours?

If so, we’d recommend this one from Varmax, which comes with a built-in work surface that can be quickly attached and removed.

Even with its compact size, this machine’s functions and expandable features made it hard to believe that it was so cheap. For the price, I was amazed it sewed as well as it did and the small size would be perfect for smaller hands.

Cool Maker Sew N’ Style Sewing Machine with Pom-Pom Maker Attachment

Cool Maker - Sew N’ Style Sewing Machine with Pom-Pom Maker

as of July 20, 2024 8:33 pm

This one is more of a toy thank an actual sewing machine. I ordered one to test it out. It does not use thread, but instead uses felt. I ended up giving this to my grandkids to take home but did not feel it was the machine I wanted them to learn to sew but it is really cute. I would say it is the best novelty sewing machine.

So Which One Did I Choose for My Grandkids

After all the research i ended up going with the Brother XM2701 for my grandkids who are 9 and 11. I felt it was easy to use and offered enough function that they could continue to use it as they gained more sewing experience.

Brother XM 2701 Box

This handy little machine comes with 27 built-in stitches that your youngster may learn, some of which are fundamentals that everyone should know how to do and others which are more for show and goofiness.

With this one-step buttonhole function, even young learners may try their hand at a skill they’ll always require!

Additional features include automatic needle threading, snag-free bobbin systems, six different helpful sewing foot and a free arm feature, an instruction manual with its own tutorial DVD and even a 25-year limited warranty to ensure your machine lasts like the investment you intend it to.

Of course it was one of the first one’s I reviewed but I had fun testing out all of the different machines along the way.

If I was concerned about not being able to show them the ins and outs of the machine from my own experience, I probably would have went with the easy to use SINGER 1304.

Conclusion for Best Sewing Machines for Kids

Now, you have more than enough information to make a decision about the best sewing machines for kids.

If your child loves to sew, and you don’t mind assisting them to get started, then the Brother XM2701 Sewing and Quilting Machine might be a good choice. However, if they are young or you are limited in your sewing experience, then the Singer 1304 is a safe bet.

FAQ’s About the Best Sewing Machines for Children

How Much Should I Spend on a Sewing Machine for a Child?

To save money, you can generally get an entry-level sewing machine from one of the more well-known brands like Singer or Brother in this price range.

Multiple layers of cloth may be a problem, but that isn’t something to worry about while they are this young.

My recommendation if you have the money is to get a machine in the $120-$180 range.
